Sarah Jane Shangraw took up yoga in hopes of recovering from chronic pain; it did the trick, and her relationship to her body and mind transformed. She received her 200-hour yoga teacher certification from YogaWorks, which espouses an accessible style of vinyasa flow yoga, which she learned from Natasha Rizopoulos. In 2011 Sarah Jane earned a 500-hour
certification from Barbara Benagh, master of slow flow. She keeps things fresh by studying with master teachers across the country, and is enrolled in Sarah Powers' Insight Yoga Institute, training in the integration of yoga and Buddhism.
Sarah Jane is particularly interested in the intersection of yoga and health, and the history of yoga in the West. In teaching, Sarah Jane’s training and care allow her to customize both vigorous and gentle practices to individuals. She presents all the benefits of yoga without the dangers of some of the more extreme styles offered where all-comers are taught
without oversight in large classes.
Beyond teaching and practicing yoga and meditation in the Boston area, Sarah Jane works as a book editor and spends time making music and traveling with friends. She relocates each summer to her native upstate New York.
“Sarah Jane's thoughtfulness, knowledge, and ability to tailor my yoga practice to my needs and capabilities make for challenging and satisfying lessons.” – Ed in Cambridge, Mass.
“Postures come alive as she encourages exploration through breath, the turn of a foot, relaxing into tension, listening. It’s like poetry in the body.” – Jean in Brookline, Mass.
“Sarah Jane is a skillful teacher. She taught me to listen to my own body and gave me a deep sense of confidence about yoga. I cannot imagine yoga without her guidance, and my 11-year-old daughter cannot imagine life without yoga and Sarah Jane!” – Razan in Jamaica Plain, Mass.
